What the crown carries
This body of work continues DeJeonge Reese’s exploration of Black hair as a tool of survival. From sowing grains into hair to mapping escape routes through braids, hair has carried coded messages, sustenance and protection for generations, in a similar way to how quilts were used along the Underground Railroad to share hidden directions and symbols.
