A distinctive balance of fill and void
- Yuefeng fuses bamboo weaving with lacquer art to create imposing sculptures
- Product design was his first area of study and he veered into craft out of fascination
- His creations celebrate slow making and Chinese philosophical concepts
Yuefeng He's original career was in product design, but a close encounter with craftsmanship at the age of 30 shifted his path towards a practice in the handmade. Driven by a deep curiosity about artisanal traditions, materials and processes, he taught himself bamboo weaving, along with various other Chinese heritage crafts. "I travelled around China to artisans' workshops and spent time learning with them. It was a very enriching experience," he says. Today, Yuefeng integrates the algorithmic thinking of architecture and product development to his design and making. His large-scale structured forms are handwoven from bamboo and further embellished with lacquer, to raise questions around void, being and the passage of time. His work, Bamboo Rock, was shortlisted for the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize 2024.

INTERVIEW
Visiting an artist’s studio with a friend, I was captivated by the raw materials and the creative process. It made me realise the charm of handcraft. Driven by this spark, I travelled around China to learn from master artisans of various crafts, devoting all my spare time to it.
The very first piece I made was a bowl for myself, crafted with a bamboo core and finished with natural lacquer. It has accompanied me for over ten years.
Through various crafts, I learned to embrace the pace of time. Free from artifice and pretense, the realm of craftsmanship radiates warmth, teaching me how to relate to others. In craft, I observe the world and reflect on life.
Creating in the wild with local villagers remains deep in my memory. We gathered materials on-site and crafted spontaneously. Working under open skies gave me total freedom, and their happy smiles showed me how simple joy can be.
