Magical glass worlds
- The focus of Scott's practice is to create optical illusions in glass art
- He uses the refractive index of borosilicate glass to create colour within spherical forms
- His pieces evoke outer space, including stars, comets and galaxies
A varied background in the arts underpins Scott Hronich's journey in glass sculpting. “Painting was my first love,” he says. He studied art at university and is self-taught in glass, having had no formal training in the craft beyond a few weekend courses. “I started working with glass a couple of years after leaving college,” he explains. “The first object I made in glass was a pendant for a girl I was dating!" Scott's works are known as vortex marbles, and he currently creates some of the largest borosilicate glass spheres being made today. These range from jewellery pendants to decorative spheres. One of the biggest turning points in his career came when he began exhibiting in New York City. “The market and customer base there were more adventurous, and my work felt unique within that environment,” explains Scott.

INTERVIEW
I found a great deal of support for the work I was doing when I arrived in New York. Having ideas and making things as an artist is easy. Paying for the equipment, supplies and time is not. That support allowed me to build my practice on a larger scale and create more of the work I truly wanted to make. From there, my work travelled all over the world.
The biggest challenge for craft in the future is sales. Society has been moving away from collecting objects. People do not collect art in the same way that they used to. They still enjoy experiencing glass art, but that alone does not necessarily sustain the craft.
Environmental concerns are not central to my craft. 'Sustainable' has become something of a buzzword, in my view. Your materials may consume less energy, but what you make may not last. Glass requires a high level of energy consumption, but my pieces could last a million years in all kinds of harsh conditions.
My current body of work hopefully conveys several new messages. In the past, my work was about turning science into magic. Now I am trying to transform emotions into shared experiences — turning difficult feelings into hopeful beauty, ready for change. Wish me luck.
