Floating metal lines in space
- Sarah makes weightless, abstract wire sculptures
- Through her pieces, she explores containment and transparency
- Her works invite viewers to move around them and explore their different angles
Sarah Stevenson creates suspended sculptures using fishing line and metal wire. Her works resemble three-dimensional drawings, with fine lines forming open, transparent structures that rotate gently in space. "I had long been interested in containers and what they hold. Today, I create forms that hold only air, in which empty space becomes part of the work," she says. Sarah's sculptures are large-scale and symmetrical, constructed from carefully measured grids and shaped by the pull of gravity. Inspired by organic forms, they recall sound waves and the movement of water, as well as plants and underwater life. Working from detailed drawings, Sarah builds each piece through a precise process.

INTERVIEW
I work with fishing line and wire. I like the range of colours and the availability of the material, which allows me to build large structures that remain light, flexible and easy to transport.
I have always been interested in making container-like forms that reveal their interiors. Over time, I became more interested in the vessel itself rather than what it held. Today, I create suspended outlines that encapsulate empty space.
I build my sculptures from the top down, creating grids with lines and wire rings to form an open weave. Though labour-intensive, the manual assembly process is deeply contemplative.
Drawing is fundamental to how I translate ideas into space. I start by sketching and then make full-scale drawings to map out each piece. The final sculpture is essentially a three-dimensional drawing, where wire and thread function as line.
