Understanding the natural state of clay

Sarah Oakman is a ceramic artist based in Bornholm, Denmark. Her practice explores and experiments with the expressive potential of clay. A guiding principle in Sarah’s studio is that every kiln firing must include at least one experimental test piece, with success measured by the insights gained. Sarah also creates functional pieces for everyday use, collaborating with restaurants and companies. “I see myself less as a designer of forms and more as a mediator of the material itself,” she says. Sarah is the co-owner of Matter–House of Craft, a contemporary craft collective that serves as the setting for her ceramic practice.

Presented for Homo Faber 2026, BARK Candelabra is the result of Sarah’s investigations into clay’s natural tendency to shrink, crack and transform throughout the making process. To her, the project is a tribute to an ancient material that has long been controlled and refined. Rather than directing the material, she facilitates a framework in which it can express its own inherent qualities and logic. This approach is in line with Sarah’s central practice, which seeks to play with the autonomous behaviour and properties of materials as they interact on their own terms in the movement of glazes, the precipitation of metals or the cracking of clay during drying and firing.
