Precision and unpredictability in clay

  • Sarah creates hand cast porcelain works with metallic accents
  • Her work has been featured in numerous publications and exhibitions worldwide
  • Her Excava mirrors feature a seemingly glossy, liquid-like surface

Sarah Cihat's ceramic practice is rooted in curiosity, craftsmanship and a deep respect for process. "There is no fixed answer to how long a piece takes to complete," she explains. "Temperature, clay type, mould condition, drying time and multiple firings affect the process in different ways." A product design graduate from Parsons School of Design, Sarah approaches each piece with patience and adaptation, from casting slips of varying thickness to carefully slowing drying and preventing warping. Precision and unpredictability define her work, a balance refined over years while building custom-made tools. Sarah works in collaboration with other artists and embraces commissions. “Creative challenges spark new ideas” she says.

Sarah Cihat is a master artisan: she began her career in 2003 and she started teaching in 2005.

INTERVIEW

Nature is the perfect reference for colour and proportion. While I observe structure, symmetry and order in natural systems, I am drawn to proportionate asymmetry, contrast and decay.

I experiment with combining and firing different clays together. Will they stay together? Can they survive different shrinkage rates? How will that look, and can I use that aesthetically?

An X-acto blade, ribs and scrapers are essential. I use a fan brush or spray booth to achieve smooth glazes, alongside a silent dental air compressor. A custom perforated holder working as a jig for consistent cutting has become indispensable to my process.

Clay forces me to keep learning due to endless process variables involved in the process. There are seemingly infinite tweaks and changes I can make that alter my final fired result.
