The marquetry miniaturist

  • Rose works on a miniature scale with multi-material marquetery
  • Her degrees in marquetry and cabinetmaking inform her practice
  • Inspired by nature, her material combinations capture changing light

Specialising in multi-material marquetry, Rose Saneuil works with a unique and officially patented technique she developed to bring together contrasting elements. Her practice bridges traditional materials such as wood, straw, parchment and leather, with unexpected components like beetle elytra and feathers. Through meticulous craftsmanship, Rose crafts one-of-a-kind artwork and limited-edition collections. Her creations span paintings, jewellery and fountain pen details, each deeply inspired by nature and its luminous reflections. Rose continuously works with major luxury watchmaking and high jewellery maisons, applying her signature marquetry to precious objects, often set with gemstones. Notably, her collaboration with Piaget on a watch dial won the 2023 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in the Métiers d’Art category.

Rose Saneuil is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2003.

INTERVIEW

Marquetry perfectly aligns with my personality and way of being. I am both analytical and deeply passionate about art. It is a practice in which technical precision and rigour are essential, yet it still allows complete freedom for artistic expression.

I love the final outcome of my creative process. After weeks and months, of letting a project mature, it is so exhilarating to see the finished piece elevated on a prestigious surface.

The opening of the Montblanc Museum in Hamburg was deeply memorable. After presenting my work on the 'First Ascent of Mont Blanc' pen, a collector told me 'When I saw your work, my heart stopped!' I replied, 'When you say that, mine stops too'. In that moment, I knew the sincerity of my craft had been understood.

Rare crafts such as mine are always at risk. It is not a trendy practice. In a world driven by speed, people do not always see the immense labour and time required for each piece, which is why my work naturally aligns with the luxury sector.
