Mingkai Zhou's ceramic studies at Jingdezhen Ceramic University have allowed him to translate classic modelling techniques he learned as a figurative sculptor into ceramic art. Inspired by daily life and personal experiences, he combines narrative sculpture and raw clay textures, working with structural logic and holistic observation. Guided by the intrinsic nature of clay, Mingkai embraces the transformation of fire and clay during high-temperature firing, honouring shrinkage, texture, and kiln shifts. "Instead of shying away from technical unpredictability, I regard craftsmanship as a fluid container for creative ideas," he says. Through continuous material experimentation, Mingkai challenges established artistic mindsets, broadening the horizons of ceramic sculpture.
