The changing nature of glass
Michela Cattai is a contemporary glass sculptor working in the Murano blown glass tradition. Her pieces investigate the transformation of matter in forms that appear suspended between solidity and dissolution. In Michela’s hands, glass becomes a medium through which memory, abstraction and visual rhythm take shape. She founded Galleria ART+DESIGN in Milan’s Brera district in 1991. Michela’s pieces are exhibited internationally and are held in prominent permanent collections around the world.
Salice and Quercia, part of the Alberi series, reflect Michela’s attention to landscape and nature’s silent strength. Light becomes a material in the piece, interacting with the shapes, while the dark graphite colouration anchors the sculpture’s presence. The pieces formed part of Michela’s solo exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum of Venice in 2025. They are made from hand blown Murano glass. Each piece is unique, created under the artist’s direction in a Murano furnace.
