Weaving scenes with wicker
MARIAGROUP is an architecture and design studio led by brother and sister duo Georges and Michèle Maria. Based in Beirut, the practice undertakes projects at all scales throughout Lebanon, the Middle East and Europe, from small interior projects to large urban plans. The studio is deeply committed to the understanding that architecture is shaped by a collaborative confluence of design ideals, knowledge and craftsmanship. It seeks to create a unique world of experiences for every project.
D2 is a wing chair that exemplifies MARIAGROUP's scenographic approach to interior design. The piece presented at Homo Faber 2026 belongs to a project that explores rattan craftsmanship, in collaboration with Dima Stephan of design studio Rattan Hun. Conceived as a spatial narrative, it invites the viewer to engage with an experiential approach to the use of space. The design centres on wicker seating and is worked with a single material, rattan. By grouping multiple rattan chairs of different types and heights, MARIAGROUP creates a theatrical environment in which seats become both functional objects and scenographic elements.
