MAPU SPEAKERS

Audio system making

Bremen, Germany

Where craftsmanship meets tech

Speakers made by MAPU SPEAKERS are the first active sound systems handmade from clay and other low-impact materials, such as wood, wool, cork and copper. The production methods used to make these speakers rely on ancestral craft techniques together with cutting-edge electronics and acoustics developed at Sound Hub Denmark, the world’s leading sound technology environment. Each speaker is handcrafted in traditional craftsman workshops in rural areas of Portugal, Chile and Germany, while final assembly and quality control are carried out individually in Bremen.

MAPU SPEAKERS aims to support a new generation of potters. Every speaker is a numbered, unique piece bearing the traces of the hands that built it and of the kiln it was fired in. The housing and packaging are completely biodegradable and the electronics can be repaired, replaced or recycled. The MAPU project developed by Pablo Ocqueteau and Philine von Düszeln, founders of the the Bremen-based design and culture studio Documentary Design, aims to achieve cultural, social and environmental sustainability.
