Putting personality into printing

  • Lorenz pushes the limits of screen-printing
  • He puts a lot of emotion into his work
  • He is inspired by technical advancements

Lorenz Boegli is internationally renowned as an innovative screen-printing artist. With passion, experience and technical excellence he has pushed the limits of what screen-printing can do, for example through his development of the additive four colour RGB print. In general, “screen-printing offers great opportunities to express and integrate your personality into your work,” he says. “I work very emotionally, since putting a lot of emotion into it differentiates my work.” Since 1981, Lorenz has explored the possibilities of screen-printing in its various forms, helping artists and designers worldwide realise their visions in pigment and paper.

Lorenz Boegli is a master artisan: he began his career in 1991 and he started teaching in 1994.

INTERVIEW

It comes from innovation, such as a new paper, novel pigments or a technical advancement. Sometimes, as I figure out a challenging printing job, my thoughts lead me to new ways of doing something.

My primary work is pure craft; however the graphic design process and other tasks such as communication are digital. My task is to combine both in an optimal way; in other words, to use digital technology to optimise the manual screen-printing results.

That it is possible to produce very professional and elaborate results with the relatively simple technique of screen-printing; and that it is still possible to influence the result very strongly with your personality.

Yes, because with innovative ideas it is still possible to make a living out of it. Graphic screen-printing is very rare today, but there is great demand in functional printing for the technology and the expertise.
