With close attention to memory

  • Levent sees clay as a material able to convey its own story
  • He turned to clay work after an initial career in office work
  • He uses natural oxides to create layered surfaces

After nearly two decades in the private sector, Levent Marali chose to dedicate himself to ceramics. His interest in clay began with a curiosity for hand-building techniques, but the material soon became a way to explore memory and the passage of time. Drawn to both the physical and emotional potential of it, he became interested in the vessel as a symbolic form capable of holding stories. Levent works primarily with the coil-building technique, building a piece up layer by layer. He also places great importance on surface treatment. "I use natural oxides to create variations in colour and texture. They make the surface look stratified, which evokes the passage of time," explains Levent.

Levent Marali is a rising star: he began his career in 2022 and he started teaching in 2025.

INTERVIEW

The most significant turning point in my career was undoubtedly the decision to leave a field in which I had worked for many years to devote myself fully to a creative practice. It represented not only a professional change, but also a profound personal transformation.

My creations are not simply forms or objects; they are a way of exploring memory, time and the ways in which experiences leave their mark.

One of the aspects I enjoy most is the gentle resistance that develops between the material and myself during the creative process. Clay is a material with a memory of its own. It has its own rules, limitations and demands.

No one can truly teach you what a particular piece of clay 'wants to become' when you hold it in your hands. Over time, you learn to listen to the material, to recognise its limits and to understand when it should be guided and when it is better to let it express itself.
