History carved in reclaimed wood

  • Lara works on carving and restoring commissions using local and reclaimed wood
  • She shares her craft and historical knowledge through teaching
  • Her pieces reimagine historical styles following her intuition

Lara Reisigl Domeneghetti is an Italian woodcarver, gilder and mentor based in Gjøvik in Norway. "I am trained in sculpture and decorative arts across Italy and the UK, which allows me to combine deep historical knowledge with contemporary craftsmanship," she says. Lara works from a small farm-based studio, where traditional craftsmanship is closely connected to rural life. Inspired by principles found in natural horsemanship such as patience, observation and an individual approach, she develops mentorship programmes that encourage students to engage with craft. “I often deliver bespoke programmes in collaboration with museums, educational institutions and cultural organisations," she says. Lara collaborates with museums internationally and has taught in Norway, Saudi Arabia and the USA. Her practice spans historical reconstructions, restoration and bespoke commissions in wood, gilding and painting.

Lara Reisigl Domeneghetti is a master artisan: she began her career in 2007 and she started teaching in 2012.

INTERVIEW

Wood carving felt like a return more than a decision. I come from a long line of carpenters, and though I first trained in the arts, I was always drawn back to the quiet rhythm of hand tools and the presence of wood. It gave form to something I already carried inside me.

I have always felt a continuous pull. I was always reaching for tools in my grandfather’s woodworking shop when I was small, drawn in by scent, shape and quiet magic.

I work almost entirely with reclaimed or local wood, including timber from old Norwegian houses, branches and ocean-worn driftwood. The land gives me both material and rhythm, and I try to carve in a way that respects its voice.

How physically demanding carving is. It is not delicate in the way people imagine. It requires strength, balance and a deep trust in both process and material. I often work outdoors or in simple conditions, guided more by feeling than by formulas.
