Kristen and John Malan bring the artistry and colours of Southern African beadwork into contemporary interior design. Kristen, a jewellery maker, joined hands with husband John, a product designer to bring Brilliance Bead Atelier to life in 2023. "I have always been fascinated by the history of beads, which I consider to be the earliest form of human adornment," she says. Among the duo's creations are beaded chandeliers, mirrors, sculptural pieces and other bespoke objects that find a home in private residences, hotels and commercial interiors. "Our vision is to reinterpret traditional beadwork and give it a modern twist through our collaborations with designers and architects," Kristen and John explain.

INTERVIEW
Kristen: Absolutely. By integrating modern processes with the ancient art of beadwork, we create pieces that celebrate human ingenuity and expand the boundaries of this craft.
John: Working on commissions with designers and architects brings a different energy to the pieces we create. Being involved in the development of an idea for a custom-made piece allows us to produce work that brings distinct value to the overall design concept.
Kristen: We start by conceptualising the piece together. John then handles the technical design, while I refine the concept and source all necessary materials, such as the beads. Finally, we work together on bringing the piece to life.
John: Once a piece is installed, we step back, often amazed by the result of our efforts. It is truly thrilling to see our creation in its intended space for everyone to see.
