The work of Kristen and John Malan brings the artistry and colours of South African beadwork into contemporary interior design. An award-winning jewellery designer, Kristen joined forces with husband John, a product designer, to bring Brilliance Bead Atelier to life in 2023. "I have always been fascinated by the history of beads, which are among the earliest forms of human adornment," she says. Working on creations in collaboration with designers and architects, the duo's shared vision centres on reinterpreting traditional beadwork for contemporary applications, underpinned by Kristen's background in jewellery design. Together, they design and make beaded chandeliers, mirrors, sculptural pieces and other bespoke objects that find a home in private residences, hotels and commercial interiors.
