The quiet pursuit of the moon jar
- Jong Young is dedicated to creating Korean moon jars
- His multiple firings transform every vessel into a unique work of art
- He preserves the timeless spirit of his work by embracing irregularities
In an age of constant reinvention, Jong Young Kim’s practice is defined by patience, repetition and quiet devotion. Trained in ceramics at Busan Arts High School, the Korea National University of Cultural Heritage and Dankook University, he has dedicated his career to the timeless form of the Korean moon jar. Rather than following a traditional apprenticeship, Jong Young developed his skill through years of observation and relentless experimentation. "Every moon jar is a dialogue between the maker, clay, fire and time," he says. Embracing the subtle unpredictability of the kiln, Jong Young creates vessels that celebrate imperfection, individuality and the enduring beauty of Korean white porcelain. He seeks to evoke a quiet sense of emotion and lasting appreciation in those who encounter his work.

INTERVIEW
Every step matters, but wheel throwing and firing require the greatest concentration. The kiln ultimately determines the outcome, so understanding the movement of fire and controlling the temperature comes only through years of practice and hundreds of firings.
Unlike global ceramics, the Korean moon jar is admired for its pure white surface and unadorned form. Its gentle asymmetry and the natural traces left by the kiln create a quiet beauty that reflects both nature and Korean aesthetics.
A moon jar's beauty lies in subtle distortion, balanced proportions, and natural marks created by fire. Together, these elements express an authentic sense of Korean beauty shaped by nature rather than precision.
While every artist approaches the moon jar differently, I hope more makers will embrace its natural beauty. Slightly irregular forms and the traces of fire reveal its true essence, preserving the timeless spirit of this uniquely Korean vessel.
