Layers of literary jewellery
- Jeremy crafts laminated paper jewellery from books he has personally read
- He encapsulates narratives and emotions into wearable art
- He cuts pages from books and compresses them into solid forms before carving them
Jeremy May enjoyed making objects in his father's workshop as a child and has always had a fascination with working creatively with paper. In 1999, he started working as a landscape architect, particularly enjoying the model-making aspect. For his first wedding anniversary in 2007, Jeremy decided to create a paper ring as a gift for his wife, which opened the doors to his current practice as a paper artist. He developed a unique process in which he cuts and compresses pages of a book and carves them into intricate wearable sculptures. In 2010, Jeremy transitioned to working full-time from his studio in Wimbledon, creating pieces for clients around the world. His work is featured in major museums including the Museum of Art and Design in New York and the Swiss National Museum. "Seeing my work in a museum was a defining moment: that was the instant I knew I was doing the right thing,” he explains.

INTERVIEW
In celebration of my wife's and my first wedding anniversary in 2007, we decided to make each other paper gifts as per tradition. While I was creating a paper ring, I had a eureka moment. I found the lamination process that I still work with today.
First, I create a sketch. Then, using a scalpel, I cut the book pages to the exact size, one page at a time, before adding color. Next, I compress the paper under high pressure until it transforms into a solid, wood-like form. I carve into it again with a scalpel and finally apply a thin layer of lacquer.
I first read the book to find inspiration for my design. As I read, I see form and colour. I do not know what I will be making until I reach the end of the book. I aim to encapsulate the emotions that the book evokes.
I mostly work on a commission basis. My clients bring me their favourite books and ask me to create pieces of jewellery from them. I find the process stressful because I have to execute the work exactly to their specifications. I also exhibit my creations based on a theme suggested by my gallery or myself. That freedom gives me the space to experiment.
