After many years spent honing his skills between Africa and Europe, Jean Servais Somian’s furniture pieces have developed a distinctive style. Produced in very small series and imbued with a strong personality, his functional items sometimes border on sculpture. Using materials including coconut wood, ebony and amazaque, Jean creates striking furniture with clean lines and links to his cultural roots. His pieces often reinterpret everyday African objects from basins and sponges to old fishing canoes in their still utilitarian forms. Jean’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in Africa, Europe, the USA and Latin America.
