Collectively making in honour of the land
Hermannsburg Potters is a collective of Western Arrarnta artisans founded in 1990. Their studios are nestled in Ntaria, in the red desert lands of the Northern Territory of Australia. The township sits on the banks of the Finke River, and traditionally, the clay of the region, also called the skin of the Earth, was collected and used only by artists with a direct connection and lineage to its shores. Nowadays, terracotta from South Australia is predominantly used to create the collective's traditional hand-coiled pots, which showcase the histories of the community and their Country. The distinctive lids of the ceramic pots feature sculptures of humans or animals related to the scenes painted on the vessel.
Each Indigenous artisan explores their creativity freely when it comes to expressing a contemporary depiction of local life. Hermannsburg Potters is organised over two studios: a larger space is run solely by women, while a smaller one is run by men. Many of the potters continue to uphold the region's artistic legacy. The watercolour style pioneered by the famed local artist Albert Namatjira, one of Australia's most notable artists, is adhered to by the artisans who grew up watching Albert paint.
