Bleached, presented as part of Homo Faber 2026, is the product of a five-year investigation on the material applications of salt. Motivated by the consequences of mineral extraction in the Dead Sea, Erez uses this series to imagine a constructive outcome from humanity’s interference with nature. For Bleached, wooden structures encased in loofah are submerged into the evaporation ponds to function as a salt pump. The loofah’s porous texture acts as an extraction tool, absorbing the salt that has piled up due to industrialisation. As the salt crystallises into otherworldly, coral-like formations, Erez transforms industrial waste into architectural forms.
