New rhythms in glass
- Elodie has refined a colourful variation of chalcedony glass
- Her flowing forms capture movement and energy frozen in time
- She actively advances arts education in the Santa Fe community
Elodie Holmes began her creative journey as a ceramicist before the allure of glass took over. “My passion for ceramics yielded to glass for its rhythm and mysteriousness,” she says. After studying with master glass artist Marvin Lipofsky and moving to Santa Fe, Elodie had a near-fatal accident en route to a Pilchuck Glass School residency that left her arm shattered. Unsure if she would ever blow glass again, she tried flameworking before eventually returning to glassblowing. Elodie is enamoured by the striations in ancient chalcedony glass, and transforms its characteristic earthy tones into the vivid colours of her acclaimed Aurora series. She has founded Liquid Light Glass Studio and co-founded the Baca Street Arts District. She is also a founding member of the Glass Alliance-New Mexico.

INTERVIEW
I explore colour, light, time and humanity’s connection to the natural world while attempting to articulate its impact. I am inspired by birding and beekeeping, science and science fiction, women’s mythology, spirituality, social justice and the environment.
Blowing glass feels like second nature to me, but I really enjoy combining techniques. Working across blowing, hot sculpting, flamework, murrines, cutting and polishing, assemblage, gold leaf and metal, I gain additional versatility to achieve my visions.
The medium of glass lends itself to healing in a 3D way. Through it, I have experienced a big mental and emotional shift and gained awareness of a higher consciousness. I see how interconnected we as humans are, and that love and light are the key to our existence.
Community is essential. I love that glassblowing, often a solo pursuit, can be a team effort. There is nothing like the camaraderie within the global glass community. It is almost like a huge art club where we support and educate each other, and share ideas and techniques.
