Beauty revealed through distortion

  • Dorian developed a unique technique of blowing PETG plastic
  • He is inspired by ancient craftsmanship and contemporary narratives
  • Through his creations, he encourages a different appreciation for plastic

Dorian Renard transforms plastic into sculptural design pieces. After completing a master’s degree at the Design Academy Eindhoven, he opened his studio in Marseille in 2019. Dorian has always been fascinated by glasswork, and after extensive research and material testing, he developed a unique technique to blow PETG plastic, as others might blow glass. “The idea is to present plastic with a new notion of beauty – one that is captivating through rippling and warping, rather than industrial dullness,” he says. Thanks to experimentation, Dorian's pieces challenge the general understanding of value, perception and beauty. He invites everyone to see plastic differently – as something worthy of admiration, not as waste.

Dorian Renard is a rising star: he began his career in 2019.

INTERVIEW

I made a chair from transparent acrylic tubes. It was mainly a way for me to explore how to shape a material I was still anxious about working with.

Collaborations allow me to diversify and explore different worlds, such as the suitcase I designed with Rimowa. Without that invitation, I would have not had the courage to create something like that.

Job Smeets, of Studio Job, invited me to work on Royal Chandelier, which featured a custom-made bronze chain and ceiling fixture produced in his Tilburg studio. This experience pushed me technically and creatively, and it marked a real shift in how I saw the potential of my work.

I usually start by drawing or sculpting in clay. Then, I recreate the forms digitally and develop cardboard templates, which serve as guides for cutting PETG sheets. After that, I dye, assemble and finally blow the desired form.
