The sacred power of detail

A visual artist and multidisciplinary designer based in Algiers, Djaffar Zizi places experimentation at the heart of his practice. He sees his studio as a laboratory where he can explore materials to reveal their poetic potential. Nurtured by craftsmanship and handmade traditions between city and countryside, Djaffar finds his grounding in the intelligence of the gesture. Whether shaping raw clay, taming metal or reinventing assemblage, his practice celebrates the hand that creates. Djaffar’s philosophy rests on the conviction that great ideas are born from the smallest things. “All it takes is to stop, listen, and get closer to nature, for that is where everything comes from,” he says.

For Homo Faber 2026, Djaffar presents Micr'osmose Fragile. His metalworking process is meticulous, first imagining a scene, then experimenting with it in 3D using paper, before transferring these silhouettes onto thin sheets of metal which are cut, perforated and welded together. By questioning the hardness of the metal to create emptiness, Djaffar transforms the technical gesture into a sensitive manifesto, telling the story of a fragment of freshwater river, its wild plants and its insects. “By shifting our gaze toward what is discreet or threatened, the infinitely small is imbued with a sacred dimension,” he says.
