The elegance of liaoqi
- Digua shapes his aesthetics in the ancient craft of Peking glass
- He blends traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetic language
- Inspired by plants, he creates art from gesture rather than imitation
Formerly a fashion designer, Digua Zhao combines lampworking and textile work to create arresting installations and garments. Known as a flower whisperer, he centres his practice around Peking glass liaoqi, a historical Chinese craft originally developed to brighten flowerless winter palaces. Rather than simply imitating nature, Digua captures the living spirit of flora by observing plant postures, natural growth cycles and botanical intelligence. By wrapping wet cotton fibres dyed with natural plants around coloured glass rods, he bridges ancestral heritage with dynamic avant-garde forms. "My work transforms static glass and textiles into thought-provoking art that carries a romantic narrative forward," Digua says.

INTERVIEW
My inspiration stems from my hometown and garden. Tending to plants, I observe them compete for soil, shape their postures, attract pollinators and spread seeds to renew life. This endless cycle of birth, growth and natural intelligence fuels my art.
My first work was a garment adorned with Peking glass flowers. For my debut solo exhibition, a friend suggested a runway show. Contrasting dynamic movement with static art brought life to the space, expressing my vision with striking clarity.
This heritage Chinese craft depends on rare coloured glass rods now facing depletion. As modern design demands more complex palettes, artists lack funds for material research, making public awareness vital to overcoming this shortage.
While traditional wrapping relies on uniformly dyed silk, I use various threads such as cotton dyed multiple times with natural plants. Blending these wet fibres produces subtle colour combinations that replicate organic plant stems.
