When art takes flight

Chris Maynard has been creating art from feathers since he was 12 years old. Today, his shadowbox pieces feature intricate scenes carved from feathers where the patterns and colours of his chosen material tell a story. He works with legally obtained feathers from turkeys, parrots, peacocks and other birds. “Feathers represent flight, transformation and a bridge between our present lives and our dreams,” he says. Chris’ new book, Feathers, Meaning and Symbology, explores the last ten years of his art practice.

In the piece presented at Homo Faber 2026, carved feathers recount a tale of wild turkeys. The birds like to roost in trees at night, coming down in the early morning to spend the day on the ground. The two featured tail feathers are from wild turkeys and have been carved into over 40 smaller turkeys at different stages of flight for the piece. Since feathers are universal symbols of flight, transformation, achievement and hope, Chris’ art speaks to many people who long for these qualities, as well as to those who revere birds.
