Weaving and woven together
- Catherine and Christophe's work balances traditional techniques with a contemporary sensibility
- They cultivated and harvested their own willow for decades
- They have been working together since their teenage years
Catherine and Christophe Romand have worked side by side since the late 1970s. Initially trained in rattan furniture making, Catherine then turned to basketry, where she met Christophe, who taught her the craft. Before pursuing their own work as a duo, they spent 30 years working in a basketmaking atelier. Christophe has focused his career on technical excellence, earning the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France in traditional basketry. Catherine has gradually turned towards artistic basketry, exploring the potential of willow beyond its traditional uses and forms. Their complementary qualities have enabled them to continually expand the boundaries of their practice. From functional objects to sculptures, their creations draw on ancestral techniques to bring a sense of movement and lightness to basketry.

INTERVIEW
Christophe: We met at a basketry school when Catherine was 16 years old and I was 18. We fell in love and I taught her the craft. At the time, basketry was still a largely male profession. We have been together ever since. We also cultivated our own willow from 1993 to 2026.
Catherine: For me, basketry is a way of life. It is the most beautiful profession in the world because it offers complete freedom of expression. If words fail you, you can still communicate through the objects you create. I pour my own sensitivity into every piece, bringing a feminine perspective to a craft that has historically been practised by men.
Christophe: We are fortunate to be very complementary in our practice. Catherine is the creator: she loves developing prototypes and imagining things that have never been done before. I am more drawn to the technical side of the craft. I master traditional techniques very few people still practise today. We work hand in hand on most of our pieces.
Catherine: I am guided by instinct, by whatever captures my attention in the moment. Inspiration can come from a painting, a work of art outside the world of basketry, or even the atmosphere of a particular image. A sculpture, a still-life, a colour, a composition, anything can spark an idea.
