When founder Sze Kiat Ng began to grow lingzhi, or reishi, in Singapore in 2020, he had not envisaged a future where the mushrooms would become furniture. Six years on, the mushroom farm has become a design studio. Seeking alternative applications of fungi, Sze Kiat started experimenting with mycelium as a low-energy material. Now a team of four, the studio works exclusively with up to 40 species of fungi to create one-of-a-kind products. Bewilder’s lamps, tables, bouquets and art pieces are grown entirely in-house over three to nine months. “I am fascinated by spheres, a basic form in nature yet one that is challenging to grow,” says Sze Kiat.

For Homo Faber 2026: An Island of Light, Bewilder present The Weight of Nothingness, a coffee table made from mushrooms. Showcasing the strength of mycelium as a sustainable material, the piece demonstrates its functionality, despite its inherent softness and fluidity. The mushrooms were grown within a mould and directed towards the crystal glass top, with textures controlled through the timing of exposure to air and light. A rising star in Singapore design, Bewilder debuted at Milan Design Week with a collection of lamps and fungariums for growing lingzhi in 2025.
