Lacy Barry

Paper artist

Berlin, Germany

A carboard interpretation of nature

  • Lacy is inspired by natural forms and saturated colours found in ecological and architectural environments
  • She works with recycled cardboard to reduce waste
  • Her creations are heavily rooted in solarpunk and lunarpunk aesthetics

Working mainly with paper and recycled cardboard, Lacy Barry creates vibrant sculptures, paintings, textile surfaces and installations. Born in Alberta, Canada, she was always fascinated by the wonders of the Canadian Rockies. "I was unknowingly influenced by the natural shapes, patterns and colours I found on my daily excursions as a child. These elements are now infused in my art objects," she says. Primarily self-taught in her craft, Lacy holds a degree in graphic design and has a background in costume, set and interior design work. She launched her practice in Alberta in 2010, before moving to London, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York and later Berlin. Today, in addition to her studio and commission work, Lacy hosts workshops for interested creatives. Her creations have featured in different publications and exhibitions such as in Germany, Italy and the USA.

Lacy Barry is a master artisan: she began her career in 2010 and she started teaching in 2017.

INTERVIEW

I grew up surrounded by the Canadian wilderness. I was exposed to so many natural and cultural wonders as a child, such as the vibrant green and indigo northern lights in the winter months and the Powwow Celebration of the First Nation Tribe with its beautiful costumes.

I create pillar-like sculptures adorned with flora and fauna or exhibited against graphic mural backgrounds. Occasionally, I add glitter, foil, miniature details and feathers that remind me of the First Nation Tribe’s colourful garments.

My craft chose me. After nearly a year of playing around with different materials from different fabrics to plastics, reclaimed objects and miniatures, paper seemed like the medium that I was always coming back to.

I always try to have an in-depth understanding of colours, and I imagine a project from start to finish. I have developed different techniques through a lot of experimentation and observation of paper materials. For certain aspects, I rely on computer software.
