Creating an imprint of the past

Antoinette Poisson is a decorative arts atelier born from an intriguing restoration discovery. While renovating an old French home, founders Jean-Baptiste Martin and Vincent Farelly uncovered many layers of beautiful wallpaper, testifying to generations of history and changing tastes, one on top of the other. Both trained conservators-restorers, the duo were charmed by the craftsmanship of this domino paper made of meticulously block-printed, hand coloured sheets of wallpaper. Their encounter with this nearly lost craft inspired the launch of their Paris atelier in 2012.

The precursor to rolled wallpaper, domino paper was the decorative vernacular of 18th century France, enabling ordinary households to embellish their living space with handcrafted soul. Today, Antoinette Poisson’s small team recreates, designs and produces historically inspired prints on wallpaper, fabric and objects, with collaborators including Gucci and the Château de Versailles. A forthcoming collection extends the atelier’s vision to interior design, with papier-mâché wedding boxes inspired by archive designs along with lampshades and tablecloths that take their heritage motifs, as they say, from wall to table.
