The Manufacture Emaux de Longwy was founded in 1798 and has been an earthenware reference ever since. Reputed for excellence, Emaux de Longwy holds the exclusive right in France to produce “cloisonné” enamels on earthenware. To this day, all pieces fabricated by Emaux de Longwy bear the historical stamp and are accompanied by a certificate of origin – from vases to lamps and other decorative pieces. This shop located in Metz gives visitors the opportunity to discover the pieces handcrafted by talented craftspeople in the workshops at Longwy.

La Rochère opens the doors to their shop which is located next to the famous glass manufacturer. Set in a beautiful 17th-century building, the shop displays a selection of the manufacturer’s collections in decoration, tableware and jewellery. There is also an exhibition on the history and techniques used in glass making, including a film on the current work of the glassblowers of La Rochère. Below the gift shop, an art gallery features contemporary-style paintings and sculptures is nestled in a pleasant Japanese garden. A vaulted room, known as the Caveau de Saint-Valbert, houses a collection of antique furniture and Aubusson tapestries.

The shop is located in a small courtyard in the Marais, behind an old wooden garage door. Thursday afternoons are the only days when it's open. Upon entering, you feel transported back to 1912, when the shop moved to its current location at 20, rue Rambuteau. Row after row, antique wooden boxes line the walls, all numbered and labelled. Usually the owners are in the front room and assist visitors in finding the right colour. Pastel names are poetic... Wild Brown, Intense Violet, Naples Yellow, Rouge Geranium. The boxes contain 1200 bars of pastels that are so intense you can't decide which one you want. The two owners regularly create special editions together to celebrate a theme or colour.

Maison Bonnet has handcrafted glasses since 1930 and the shop has been in the charming Passage des Deux Pavillons in Paris for more than a decade. This Parisian eyewear maker, or lunetier, offers bespoke and ready to adjust glasses in their beautiful showroom. The process of acquiring a pair of glasses from Maison Bonnet begins with a conversation about personality, often lasting more than an hour. With their experience, they guide clients in designing the perfect pair of glasses, which will be entirely handmade in tortoise shell, buffalo horn or acetate. Maison Bonnet masters the science of vision and lenses and the art of handmade frames.

Just a few steps from Saint-Germain des Prés, in the very heart of Paris’s Rive Gauche, the showroom of La Manufacture Cogolin offers a unique selection of artisanal rugs hand woven or hand knotted by local craftswomen in a small village near Saint-Tropez. A staple of French heritage, Cogolin has left its imprint on the decorative arts of the 20th century with its unique and expert craftsmanship. All rugs are made of noble materials like wool, cotton, jute, linen, silk and raffia, and are still crafted using traditional techniques and 19th century handlooms equipped with the renowned Jacquard mechanism.

Homo Faber Guide is a signature project developed by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, an international non-profit organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, which was set up in 2016 thanks to the intuition of Franco Cologni and Johann Rupert. The Michelangelo Foundation’s mission is to celebrate and preserve master craftsmanship, and for this reason it has created a map of the most significant representatives in this field, with the aim of connecting all its protagonists: artisans, designers, gallery owners, art curators, collectors and enthusiasts of high-quality handmade pieces.

About the Guide

Are you an artisan, atelier or manufacturer? Would you like to be featured in Homo Faber Guide? The Michelangelo Foundation encourages self-assessment initiatives and is pleased to evaluate new members to appear on the Guide or in other projects. Thanks to the Master’s Touch Evaluation Tool, every artisan can send their application: register and access a questionnaire to see if you fulfill the 11 criteria for excellence that stand behind all the activities of the Michelangelo Foundation. If your answers reach the minimum requirement, your application will be brought to our attention; if, on the contrary, you should score below the minimum requirement, we will give you some points for improvement, in the hope that you may participate in future initiatives of the Michelangelo Foundation.

A master artisan is an accomplished artisan who has been in activity for more than ten years, and who has also been engaged in passing on his or her expertise to the younger generations for more than seven years. This is in keeping with one of the key values of the Michelangelo Foundation: the transmission of knowledge in craftsmanship.

A rising star is an artisan who has been active for less than ten years, and who is capable of expressing his or her craft with competence, creativity and originality. Whether self-taught or trained, the rising star represents the future of craftsmanship, in creativity, concerns and approaches.

Who is a Rising star?

The artisans featured in Homo Faber Guide have been selected through a meticulous assessment process based on the 11 criteria for excellence, identified by Alberto Cavalli, Executive Director of the Michelangelo Foundation, in the volume The Master’s Touch, written with researchers Giuditta Comerci and Giovanna Marchello. The members of the Michelangelo Foundation’s network who have been invited to participate in sourcing artisans for the Guide use an evaluation tool based on these criteria. In this way, they can identify the most suitable artisans to include in the project.
