The musicality of tapestries
- Renate has created her own Ghiordes knot technique
- For her, music has certain colours
- She is inspired by Bauhaus style
Renate von Löwis von Menar is happiest when she can create new designs on her looms in her studio in Hamburg. Her daily work schedule can reach 10 hours per day. Renate was introduced to the Bauhaus style of textiles when she was a child by regular visiting Gustav Beck, an artist and art collector. At the time, Beck brought many international artists to Wolfsburg, Renate's hometown. Her fascination with the Bauhaus tapestry not only motivated her to train as a hand weaver, but also led her to create her own designs and even weaving techniques. Another important influence in Renate's work is music and her time as a tour manager in the music industry.
Interview
What is it that drives you?
I strive for independence in my creative work. I don't like making things that already exist. My interest in research and experimentation is a great advantage here. Being able to develop original work is my biggest motivation.
What is your knotting technique?
My weavings are often woven using a technique that combines flat weave and knotting. The Ghiordes knot, which is many centuries old, has been further developed for this purpose. The knot isn't as rigid since I tie only 20 knots per inch.
How does music influence your work ?
While I'm weaving, I always listen to music. The musical styles may differ greatly. I see music as having different colours. For my woven pieces, I often use music to find the colour combinations I want to use.
What is little known about your work?
I can be found on instagram. Many of the people there ask me questions about my technique and request a particular piece. I am often suprised by how few people can imagine the effort and time it takes to weave a piece, or how valuable it is.
