George and Sotiroula have a shared passion for ceramics

George and Sotiroula are in love with each other and are also in love with clay. George learned the craft from his father, who was a potter. Sotiroula is a self-taught ceramicist and painter, who loved clay before she loved George. They opened their workshop in 1988 where they create useful ceramic items from teapots to table lamps. A visit to their studio-gallery is a memorable experience, immersed as it is in greenery and boasting a wonderful view. They are inspired by nature and tradition, which they fuse in their unique minimalist style. Their exclusive ceramic items are the result of years of experience and an experimental approach to creation. Their useful objects bring joy to people who hold them, reviving positive memories every time they are used.

How is your art linked with Cypriot tradition?
We believe that beauty comes from simplicity so we create simple and clear forms inspired by Cypriot ceramic traditions applied in a modern way. We are also greatly inspired by nature. That’s why we try to produce matt earthy coloured glazes.
What makes a good ceramicist?
A good ceramic piece does not just require time to be created. It involves years of experience for the ceramicist to master the art. Fire is involved too; it is a stage where an object can turn into something beautiful or to a disaster.
What do you feel while working?
Working with clay is a very creative process that offers us inner peace and satisfaction. This is what we love the most. We also draw joy from the fascination of people who attend our workshops. It feels good to share creativity and love.
Do you think your craft will survive in modern times?
No matter how widely available cheap objects are, people will always look for handmade items as they are unique and special. When you drink from a handmade mug you feel special. It may bring back memories of places or people that make you happy.
