Inlaying marquetry with straw and invention

  • • Jean-Baptiste has refined the Cercus method of marquetry
  • • Made to measure projects are at the heart of his craftsmanship
  • • He graduated with a Métiers d’Arts diploma

Jean-Baptiste Saint-Criq is mastering the art of straw marquetry. After studying cabinet making for several years, he became passionate for this careful handcraft. Through learning the traditional methods, the young artisan has started to challenge age old conventions to innovate and add his own twist. Jean-Baptiste has developed a unique technique, Cercus marquetry, which involves playing with different superimpositions of straw layers, in different colours, patterns and rhythms. Made to measure, his decorative creations present a colourful and contemporary graphic design. Jean-Baptiste’s unique pieces are of great interest to decorators and interior architects, as well as to major luxury houses.

Jean-Baptiste made the rear fender, the tank and the logos in elm and lemon wood marquetry and in brass for this customised BMW motorbike. All of the wooden elements needed to be an incredibly precise and meticulous, the scheme was inspired by Riva boats for the colours, materials and patterns. This customised R-Nine T model was entered in the BMW in-house competition.

Cabinet of Curiosity

This piece of furniture was designed by Jérôme Faillant Dumas and his studio, Love Éditions. This curiosity cabinet is made in glossy red lacquered medium with two drawers and a shelf. The marquetry is in rye straw, using the Cercus technique, and represents a weft inspired by tweed, with shimmering reflections in tinted brass grey. A matt polyurethane varnish finish protects the marquetry. Bronze elements have been inlaid in the doors. The base and handles are in solid bronze.

Cuban table

The bespoke structure of this table, designed not to have legs at the corners, is made of folded and welded steel. The patina is made of sprayed pigments and then varnished. The top is made of panels of medium wood and is covered with inlaid rye straw, which is tinted, sanded and varnished. A 6-coat matt polyurethane varnish protects the marquetry. A slight variation in colour can be seen on one of the marquetry elements.

Wall panel in sanded straw marquetry, Cercus technique. Unique creation inspired by the natural and organic world. It is essentially a work of graphic research and composition of colours and materials. The thickness layers of straw oscillate between 1 and 6 in vertical with a pink weft crossed horizontally. The graphics translate a worn, eroded but sparkling material.
