Revitalising an ancient craft

  • • János' father taught him everything he knows about blue-dyeing
  • • His craft is protected by UNESCO
  • • He tries to preserve this tradition by introducing apprenticeships

János Sárdi Senior was a renowned blue-dyer, who passed on his knowledge to his son, leaving a priceless treasure behind. Now János Junior is the one in charge of the blue-dyeing workshop, established in the small Hungarian village of Nagynyárád in 1948. He creates blue-dye textiles with delightful regular white patterns, which have been used to make traditional Hungarian garments in specific regions. János is genuinely concerned for his craft, as it is threatened by extinction. Therefore, he has taken matters into his own hands by launching a traineeship programme for adults interested in blue-dyeing. He is so involved because he also shares the belief of his father, who once proclaimed that being a blue-dyer is a blessing from God.
