Anna Pavlova

Ceramicist

Life's coincidences

  • Anna fell into ceramics by chance
  • She loves the moment when she takes the ceramics out of the oven
  • She believes that ceramics is at its rebirth now

Anna Pavlova is a ceramicist whose life path was not always directed to ceramics. She chose ceramics by accident. When she entered the academy, she was supposed to go to the design department, but she went to the wrong group and decided to continue with ceramics. Since 2017 she started to work in her own studio where she combines different materials such as ceramics, glass, semiprecious stones, and metals. She does not work in a traditional way, but she creates her unique techniques that lead to her original creations. Anna believes that ceramics is experiencing a rebirth now and by combining it with other crafts such as glass working and jewellery making, she aims to create something completely new.

Interview

  • What do you love most about your profession?

In the creative process, my favourite moment is when I take the ceramics out of the kiln. You never know what result to epxect after firing, I love the element of surprise.

  • What is little known about your craft?

Most of the ceramic glazes are different colours before and after firing, for example cobalt glaze is violet and turquoise glaze is grey before you put it into the kiln.

  • What are your sources of inspiration?

Nature, human beings and all their activities and traditions. I'm fascinated by the diversity and versatility found in different nations and cultures.

  • What do you suggest to aspiring ceramicists?

If you don't know where to start, take a piece of clay and spoil it! You can even sculpt just for fun, then from there start to understand where you want to go with your creativity.
