Beyond the craft of books

  • Glen is a master of paper weaves
  • He draws his inspiration from Robert Rauschenberg and Japanese paper crafts and pottery
  • He combines his bookbinding craftsmanship with his passion for creating ragdolls

Almost a decade ago, bookbinder Glen Calleja embarked on his first traditional bookbinding course alongside master Lori Sauer. With a degree in Psychology and Philosophy, as well as a degree in Near Eastern Studies, Glen turned to bookbinding spurred by his interest in literature. He was fascinated by alternative book formats, asking himself "What makes a book?". He observed the manner in which the book is omnipresent in our daily lives, while also lies at the heart of our civilisation in terms of a moral and legal code, regulating our conduct while influencing a degree of power. With these reflections in mind, he began to delve into the art of book making, seeking to learn how the physical book is crafted with traditional techniques.

What words of advice do you have for a burgeoning bookbinder?
A professional art practice whose main income depends on a particular craft requires resilience and humility. It can be very rewarding and formative. Learn directly from a teacher you respect. A word of warning about shortcuts: there are none.
How would you describe your bookbinding style?
My practice and the work at the studio are very eclectic. It is tricky to trace its origins and influences and I personally prefer to think of what I do as a contemporary practice without territorial parents.
What qualities does one of your bindings capture?
Demure artistry. For example, a book opens well. A bowl is beautiful – but that does not necessarily mean it is perfectly round. Also, well made doesn’t mean flawless.
What parts of the bookbinding practice do you enjoy the most?
This profession is all about problem solving and exploration. At the beginning of a job, one rarely knows how the whole thing is going to turn out. For some, this might cause anxiety, but it suits my personality just fine.
