Following his passion

  • • Bernd’s first career was in the Swiss watch industry
  • • In his 40s, he left his job to launch his own business
  • • Practicality determines the design of his objects

Bernd Schreiner was 15 when he set up his first workshop in the basement of his parents' home, after being inspired by his father and grandfather who taught him how to carefully handle tools and materials in different crafts. Later, while pursuing a corporate career in the international watchmaking industry, he continued his artisanal work at home, improving his skills, designing, making and upcycling everyday products. Gradually, demand for his work from family, friends and colleagues increased, and so when Bernd was in his 40s, he decided to quit his job and start his own business, UNICUM. He now specialises in upcycling and renovating aluminium suitcases and making leather briefcases and bags.

Customised Rimowa trolley

In accordance with the client’s instructions, Bernd gives vintage hard shell luggage a second life by adding tailor made leather elements. Retractable handles made of vegetable-tanned leather were designed especially for this project, as well as safety straps, milled aluminum clasps and hand sewn goatskin lining.
