A design collective inspired by fly fishing

  • • Jaska In The Wild are united by their love of nature and tradition
  • • They utilise wood as their primary material
  • • Their work combines age-old methods and modern engineering

Jaska In The Wild is a team of three down-to-earth guys; Feodor, Justus and Peter with backgrounds in design, cabinet making, arts and engineering. Their name comes from an epic Lapland story of a woodsman called Jaska, which inspired the team and continues to guide its vision. That vision is deeply rooted in the Finnish wilderness. Their spirit also stems from the good old days, when craftsmanship was a part of every household in the countryside. Fishing, hiking and nature represent both their passions and resources. The idea was born on a fishing and trekking trip to Lapland in 2014. The trio wanted to create high quality, aesthetic and unique fishing equipment. A plan was hatched.

Landing Net, medium

Carrying a landing net effortlessly is important when fishing, especially in mountainous areas. This landing net offers a simple solution, by tying a Cordura loop inside the handle before attaching the rim. The result is a concealed and elegant solution that allows the holder to quickly but securely attach it to the rest of their gear.

Landing Net, small

One of the best experiences for the designers so far was a research trip to the Arctic. They had the opportunity to test out the shapes and sizes of different prototypes, while being surrounded by magical Aurora Borealis. This was a seminal moment for the group and affirmed the idea of creating a functional piece that is firmly connected to its environment and purpose.

Landing Net, medium

The finished surface of a landing net needs to be as durable as possible due to the harsh conditions it is subject to when in use. The aim is to use ecological finishes as protection to have a minimal negative impact on the environment. A mixture of linseed oil, beeswax and carnauba wax is applied to impregnate the wood with natural oils and protect the surface.

Landing Net, medium

The landing net in its natural habitat. A good friend of the collective lives in Lapland working as wilderness guide. Being so close to the best fishing areas in Finland gives him the opportunity to go out, catch trout, graylings and other arctic fish on a very regular basis. He is in the perfect position to test these items in their intended surroundings and does so on a regular basis.
