Igrika – Patterns of Georgian Memory

  • Revives Georgian ornaments & symbols
  • Hand-carves stamps for block printing
  • Creates textiles, wood décor, ex libris and more.

Founded in April 2020 by Grigol Dalakishvili and Baia Lomsadze, Igrika revives the forgotten beauty of Georgian ornaments and symbols. Hand-carving stamps and blending traditional motifs with contemporary design, they create block-printed textiles, carved wooden décor, and custom Ex Libris stamps. Each piece begins with research into cultural heritage, followed by meticulous craftsmanship that transforms raw materials into meaningful, lasting works. Igrika’s mission is to keep these stories alive, inviting each owner to become a “keeper” so that, as they say, the story will keep narrating through you.

Interview

What first drew you to block printing?
During the pandemic, I discovered wood carving, while my wife Baia playfully carved a fish on an eraser. That moment sparked my idea: to unite carving with block printing, reimagining ancient Georgian ornaments in a modern, timeless craft.
How do you choose your motifs?
My motifs draw from Georgia’s cultural heritage - medieval churches, ancient buildings, and fairy tales with symbolic meaning. With my wife, I explore these treasures through museums, archives, bookshops, and stories from mountain elders.
What makes each piece unique?
Each piece is unique: old ornaments are reimagined with new shapes and details for block printing. Every stamp is hand-carved, every print hand-placed; no two are the same. Behind each work lies a gentle story
Your proudest creation?
The ‘Moonguard’, as it is a powerful symbol from ancient Georgian beliefs, embodying protection, strength, and blessing. With origins tracing back to the 2nd millennium BC, it carries timeless meaning and cultural depth.
